Co-owner of CCFN / Coach
Amanda co-owns and runs Calvert CrossFit North. As a previous high school science teacher, she loves to travel and has spent many summers with some awesome teacher research experiences (working on a fisheries research vessel in the Bering Sea, touring around Germany when they won the 2014 World Cup in soccer, or exploring the west coast by hiking Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens after working at Pacific Northwest National Lab). Amanda moved to southern Maryland in 2012 and joined Calvert CrossFit when it opened in early 2013. She struggled to jump on a 6-inch box or complete push-ups on her knees when she first started, but found it oddly exhilarating to be laid out on her back day after day at the end of a WOD wondering what just happened. She completed her Level 1 certification because she wanted to start a CrossFit Kids program and found herself wanting to coach everyone from kids to teens to adults. CrossFit changed her life and she wants to help others discover the same passion and love for a balanced, healthy lifestyle that may involve kicking butt.

WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST CONTRIBUTION AS A COACH?
I strive to make sure that from the time athletes step through the door of the box until they leave, that it's the best hour (or more) of their day.
WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO COACHING?
I originally went for my CrossFit Level 1 so that I could coach CrossFit Kids classes. Turns out that I enjoy coaching adults just as much as kids.
FAVORITE MOVEMENT OR WORKOUT?
Favorite movement: overhead squats - Favorite workout: Grace & Annie
LEAST FAVORITE MOVEMENT OR WORKOUT?
Pretty much anything gymnastics related, but that's because I've never been proficient at them. I wish my parents had put me in gymnastics as a child sometimes.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO OUTSIDE OF IRON FOUNDRY ATHLETICS?
Hang out with my cat & my husband, travel to new places, and run various races.
ADVICE FOR SOMEONE STARTING OR WANTING TO START CROSSFIT OR EXERCISE?
Don't wait until you think you're "fit enough" or that you "need to get in shape first". When I first started CrossFit, I couldn't do a push-up on my knees, jump on a 6" box, or hang from the pull-up bar. I probably never would have gotten "fit enough" if I didn't just sign up and embrace the suck.
FINISH WITH A JOKE OR FAVORITE QUOTE.
"You can do anything for a minute!"
